Note pad is just a text editor. If you use it to open a file that is not text, you will not be able to make any sense out of what is displayed. Note pad is often used to edit HTML and PHP files which are text files. If you do not understand HTML or PHP then it will still just be gibberish to you.

The problem is, you're trying to read files that are not in a format that notepad understands. Opening a database in notepad will just show garbage. The same is true for some advanced word processors, and most other files.
Notepad is designed to read text files. (with a .txt extension). It's not designed to read other types of files. All you will get is ascii characters (the weird "code" you're seeing).

Notepad is used to open text files (files ending with TXT extension). If you open any file other than TXT, you will see strange characters because other files have data in them that are not text.

MS Word for example, which some people think is used to create text files, actually creates a DOC file. This is actually a text file with formatting commands (i.e. font size, bold, italic, etc) applied. Therefore, even opening a DOC file with Notepad would yield some strange characters.

Notepad is just a text editor/writer. You shouldn't be seeing "some kind of code" unless you're trying to read non-text files for some reason.
