Nolan Ryan is credited with throwing the fastest pitch ever in a game, which was just about 101 MPH. That's the equivilent of an object being flung by a category 2 hurricane or a strong F1 tornado.

Quite a bit of the speed measurement depends on what type of radar "gun" is being used. One measures the speed immediately following the pitchers release of the ball; this speed is the highest measurement. The other style of gun measures the speed of the pitch about half way to the plate. This is probably more accurate as the pitch has had a slight decrease in speed as it approaches the plate and the batter.

The higher speed gun is usually preferred by the stadium crews as it gives a better "WOW" factor for the fans.

Either way, Joel Zumaya or ZOOM has a great arm and is fun to watch. On the gun used at Comerica Park in Detroit he has been clocked at 103 MPH, never heard of a valid measurement any higher than that.

A note regarding Mr. Hayden Finch mentioned in another answer. He was the fictional character that George Plimpton wrote about for Sports Illustrated's April 1st edition about 20 years ago. Needless to say, no one has really thrown a baseball 168 MPH. Sorry Mr. Bundy, some kids take these answers as gospel.

I think Detroit Tigers' 7th/8th inning man Joel Zumaya hit 103mph with a strike this season. That's impressive but he doesn't just have the fireball in his armoury, he's got a change-up and a reasonable curveball.
