My sister's husband is a joiner so he cut her a nice piece of oak and I painted "No Shoes!" in a neat font and she hung it over the door.

You don't need a sign. Have an inviting cozy corner in the entrance area or foyer of your house with a chair. On a shelf will be the household's shoes (since I suppose all of you take your shoes off there) Slippers will be provided for them to wear. You or someone in the family always answer the door. As you welcome them in gesture towards the chair and help select a pair of slippers for them. They will remember the second time they come. This is common in Europe.

It is an accepted practice for some cultures. You will find such signs in Asian novelty stores in China & Japanese towns. I have one that came from Hawaii which says, Mahalo, Please Remove Your Shoes that hangs above my doorbell. I then place a basket of assorted slippers by the door and provide each guest a gift of their choice of style and size.

I usually just yell at my husband when he walks into the livingroom with shoes... Well, my mom yells too. must run in the family. lol......
In Japan and china they put slippers outside the door so ppl can change into slippers. Just offer them when guests come over. but i like the idea of a sign.. sounds cool.

Here are various signs on ebay. Some are corny, and some are not.

I had the same problem...what I did was make a shoe cubby (like stacked shoe boxes) to put your guests shoes in and put inexpensive slippers in there for them to use/have. (I gave frequent guests a name plate on their cubby) I thought it was a cute idea and it doesn't seem to offend anyone, I don't even have to ask them to do it.

I have Indian friends who prefer guests go shoe-less. They have a small set of shelves in their foyer, where they leave several pairs of shoes. This serves as gentle reminder that you should remove your shoes.
