A get-well gift isn't very appropriate because the surgery hasn't occured yet. Neither is "good luck". Keep in mind that we are her employer, not a close friend of family member. Any ideas?

Short term life insurance premiums,, just kidding.. if the person is going to be out of work,, perhaps you can pitch in for a maid cleaning service to come by the house during recovery. Flowers are nice, but they fade, and you just toss them,, lot of money for a bunch of weeds.. good luck.

I think that a day or 2 of pay (above and beyond any sick / personal time) would be appropriate, if this fits, or perhaps a gift card to peapod grocery delivery or some other convenience service that they may need after the surgery to make it a little easier.

a gift certificate to the grocery store or a check to help while she's off work. if I had to have surgery I would worry how the bills are gonna get paid.

Don't harass the poor guy / gal!... That's the first of all.

Ask his / her partner, there'll be the best answer; certainly, a little overpay will be always welcome, or some free days after hospital sends him / her back to work.
