If your choice is a driver from pre-restrictor plate days, do you think he would do as well today?

Jeff Gordon with Tony Stewart as a close second. I'm talking about pure talent and ability. I think these two stand out because of their versatility- if it has wheels, they can drive it. Anyone who really knows anything about racing would give the same answer if they are being 100% honest. But, so many people hate Gordon, for whatever reason- some rational, some not- that they will NEVER admit that he is a great driver. I have the utmost respect for the drivers of years gone by- but let's face it- we will never know how they would stack up. There was so much of a discrepency between teams back then- not the parity of the current Nascar Series. I think Dale Earnhart was great (much better than his son), but people really irritate me. If you all (who are old enough) remember- most people COULD NOT STAND him- much like Gordon now- although for different reasons. But suddenly, with his tragic death, EVERYONE LOVES him! There are several current drivers who I think have great talent- Mark Martin being one- it would really be great to see him win the championship this year- if indeed it is his last year- it would just be such a storybook ending to a career. Sorry, didn't mean to write a book.

I would say the top 4 drivers of all time would be:

Dale Earnhardt - 7 championships
Richard Petty - 7 championships
David Pearson - 105 wins
Jeff Gordon - 4 championships

And the newest great driver:

Tony Stewart - 2 nascar championships - 1 irl championship and still counting

None of the driveres running today.
Dale Earnhardt
Richard Petty
David Pearson
Cale Yarbrough
Bobby Allison
Darrell Waltrip
These drivers would run 2 to 4 times a week at tracks that todays drivers would not go to.
They probably would leave most of these today in the dirt.
If you had to pick todays drivers;
Mark Martin
Terry Labonte
Tony Stewart

I think the best drivers in NASCAR are Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Richard Petty, and another personal favorite Darryl Waltrip and his boogity boogity boogity. I love that. I think Jeff Gordon is for obvious reasons 4 championships maybe 5, 75 wins, and only 14 years of racing. Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Richard Petty both with 7 championships and a lot of wins and the KING of NASCAR and one of the greatest drivers ever, and Darryl Waltrip and his hilarious personality and hsi sense of style and racing its just awesome.

I must agree with TNTWADE, If you know about racing you would say either Gordon or Stewart. Gordon has won the title 4 times and Stewart is not far behind. These men can drive just about anything and best of all, Win. It all just seems like a pattern the better you are the more hated you are. It suck people only see the faults in these men. I hate to hear and see people here write about drivers sexuality and about them whining or how fat they are. All drivers Whine! I hate that they say Gordon is Gay, no he is not he's married and actually has a hot wife, I hate that they say Tony is fat... but has anyone ever noticed that Ryan Newman is a stocky man? no one seems to notice that. Just because they are good they get attention drawn to themselves whether it be negative or positive feedback. All and all I believe Jeff Gordon (and not being a Gordon fan) and Tony Stewart are the Best.

I think Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart. Also, if you don't like NASCAR, then don't answer the questions about it.

DALE EARNHARDT....HANDS DOWN. AND BEFORE YOU PETTY FANS GET YOUR PANTIES IN A WAD, I'LL TELL YOU WHY. PETTY WON 200 RACES BECAUSE BACK THEN, THEY RACED SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK. ALSO, WHEN PETTY RACED, NASCAR WASN'T AS COMPETITIVE, TOP TO BOTTOM AS IT WAS MIDWAY TO THE END OF EARNHARDT'S CAREER. OF THE CURRENT DRIVER'S, I THINK TONY STEWART HAS MORE ABILITY THAN ANYBODY OUT THERE.
