This is a combination of not enough ram and not enough hard disk space. Add additional RAM to your system and the problem will go away.

Mazz is correct. If u have more than 1 partition do that for all the partitions. Just one more point, If u have more than 1 partitions then don't install any software in c drive other than the Operating system(OS). I partition in the following way.

C= 20% of total HDD. Contains only the OS
D= 50% of HDD. Contains all programs.
E= 30% of HDD. Contains all data.

Remember that all programs u install are going to write some data in C drive even if u install them in ur D or E drive. Now apply ur own logics.

My computer did the same things you should do 3 things.
1.Clean up your desktop and cosolodate the icons
2.Do a disk clean up
3.Defragment you drive
This should help but if it dosent you should get a secound or bigger hard drive and maybee more or a bigger ram chip.Thats what I did.

Right click on "My Computer"
Click ont he far right "Advanced" tab
click on "Performance options"
Under Virtual memory, I usually set 2000 with 3000 max.

same with dude as above,also u can remove files that not used for a long time but use little more space slowly.
