can you tell if a record player works or not just by looking at it and not playing it? because, i want to buy one from goodwill because they seem like they're the cheapest there, but i cant actually use them there to see if they work, so is there any way i could just look at one and know if it will work?

You can try it out there, just bring a record along. I buy from Goodwill all the time, they usually let me plug the product it and test it. If they refuse, tell them If you could return it if if does not work.
The diamond needle is the most important, you have to make sure it's not dull and dead. They have to let you test it.

No way of really knowing it without testing. Have you asked if you could plug one in to try it out? Most thrift stores will let you do that. Some will even let you test with a record that is for sale there.

I would ask to plug it in to see if the platter spins and just resign myself to buying a new stylus. It probably needs one anyways and you can get a new one on eBay for less than $30.

Why don't you bring a record with you and just ask them if they can plug it in? If you tell them you're going to buy it if it works, they'll do it.
