The SSID is either broadcasted or not.
If its broadcasted, you'll the the SSID in the list of available networks.
If its not, then you'll have to find its name on your own... Ask someone who knows... Don't forget: the SSID is usually CASE SENSITIVE.

There are softwares out there that can figure out the SSID. Sorry, I am not going to teach you how to hack others wireless APs.
Mine is setup without broadcasting the SSID as well. With 128bit WEP and specific MAC addresses access list, you will never get in mine even if you have figure out the SSID. I also have a software that monitors all traffic from my pcs/pdas. Any uninvited activity will be dealt with immediately.

If the access point does not broadcast an ssid for your pda to pick up you cant access it without a network name (ssid) .

It's the I.D Needed to Access a Wireless Network. It can consist of 32 digit Number.Ask the person who set up the network for Guest Access

My PDA has a scan tool that tells me what networks are near, the signal quality and if they are open or not.
There is also a network finder which lets you know if there is a network before you boot up:
