I don't know... Probably because they like the idea of being able to make money and have freedom, yet they still prefer their own sheltered, biased ideas on religion and how to treat women... They hear that America is the best place to live, so they beilieve it and come live here to get out of their own sh*tty country, even though they still hate our ideals, they just expect special treatement and allowance for their hate, because America has that freedom of religion and speech, and the American government is so afraid to hurt someone's feelings by denying access from those people...

Don't be deceived that this country is soooo great that everyone wants to live here. The reason is that this country is known for made up of immigrants that's why people from 3rd world or the people who want to get out of their depressed government want to come here as a first choice because they assume this country is easy to get into but ofcourse they dont' know that this country is run by bunch of money hungry, greedy, racists hypocrites in the White House. So if you asks the Euros and other nations that are well off, the people there don't want to live here. It's the 3rd world and repressed people, so don't think that America is all that. It's ok but not all that as blind arrogant Americans want other countries to perceive as this is the best country in the world. What a joke!

America is the land of opportunity and freedom that is why people from poorer countries want to come here. Not all Muslims hate America that is an exaggeration. If your ancestors are not native Americans we are all immigrants. Another false hood immigrants do not get a 7 year tax break that is an urban legend.

America is the country that does all the bombing. It's always nicer to bomb than to be bombed.

Do all Muslims really hate everything we stand for? Perhaps those Muslims who come here love everything we stand for.

Certainly, terrorists favor one value we stand for: Might makes right.

[ELI, I have four points to make in reply to your response. First, never be shocked to see ignorance. As a part of the human condition, it is omnipresent. We all have plenty of it, and I do not believe it is possible to prove that one person has more of it than another person.

Second, forget the argument that we are not "America." This word is in such common usage that you would find yourself posting exactly the same point millions of times ad nauseum. It would also be pointless to say that all of our patriotic songs are wrong and should therefore be reworded.

Third, your argument and the question assume that people around the world do indeed have a negative opinion of America. This is really only a perception that may or may not be correct.

Finally, let us assume that the latter perception is indeed correct. I maintain that it is not the *fact* that America is an evildoer, but the *perception* that America is an evildoer, that causes people around the world to have a low opinion of America. Almost universally, people put their complete faith in their own information sources. This is just as true for Americans as it is for anyone else. But all of this information is filtered through others' eyes, so it is incomplete, biased, and, indeed, flawed.

Do you honestly believe that more than 1% of the world's population has a clue what America did in Argentina? I know I don't. But if the media of one Country wants to convince its citizens that America is a big evildoer, that media will put its own spin on any events that unfold involving America.

My statement about bombing is partly a metaphor for the perception other Nations are likely to have that America relies on brute force to achieve is objectives.

So, why do they flock to America? A problem with your argument, ELI, is that you assume the falsity of one of the questioner's assumptions. The questioner assumes that Muslims hate everything we stand for--including our obsession with the attainment of wealth. If this assumption is correct, then your explanation that they are seeking a better life, if interpreted materially, simply cannot hold. This is why I questioned the truth of this assumption.

I believe your explanation is partly correct. But I believe they want a better life both materially and nonmaterially. I am sure that Iranian citizens are particularly desperate to become American citizens right now. No one wants to find him or herself stuck in a Country that meets American disfavor--lest the Country wind up like Iraq.]

America is the only country where the people can *****, whine, moan, and complain about the government and not get beheaded for treason because somebody disagrees with what King George says.

We have the right to Free Speech, they just envoke that right more than "native" Americans. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I think it's because the lines of people trying to get into Venezuela, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Cuba, etc,,,etc,,,, are just too damn long - and they don't want to wait.

Why indeed.

Another interesting question is why on earth would people risk everything to illegally enter a country and then not want to become a citizen? And even demonstrate and bad mouth everything that country stand for? Pretty much just bring their language and customs with them and expect the country to assimilate to them instead of the other way around?

Beats me.

They think it's the land of the free. But when they get here it's a whole different story. Also they work here without paying taxes for 7yrs!!! I would come here to..to save some money for my family and then go back. The american dollar is worth more. So they make out in the long run. I hope this helped.

It would be really good to read a question from one of you cons that didn't involve some logical flaw. In this case your straw man assertion about America being so terrible

It's not so terrible, and that's why so many want to live here. Consider the mid-east -- lot's of sand and 120 degrees in the shade. That's enough to make your very cranky and start shouting "Death to America" - jealousy plain and simple.

We do need to lean toward isolation a little more & put a stop to the very same things you mention. Change & inforce laws to protect the legal citizens & prosicute offenders ie employers that offend the crimes,
