Yeah this is for school homework. For Biology. I know a lot about horses, but I just wasn't quite sure of my answers. And I wanted to ask some other equine horse experts out there, to varify results.

When at what age does a mare and stallion become sexually mature and breed:

Filly average age of puberty (Estrous Cycle) is 12 to 15 months. but statistically stated that even then it is still too young to really hold a pregnancy health wise. Usually 3 to 4 years old, when become a Mare, is mature enough to handle a pregnancy, depending on their size and health.

Very few stallion are used at stud as 2 year olds. If so, the numbers of sercices should be restricted two two per week. Three year olds can be used once a day.

How hands are in a feet?

4 inches to a hand. 12 inches in a foot, so that means 4X3=12. Three hands to a foot.

If a horse is 62 inches high, that would be 15.2 hands. Which is 15 hands and 2 inches.

Therefore, subtracting 2 inches from that, would equal 15 hands, at 60 inches.

Average weight for a horse? Pounds and ounces?

Arabian is average at 933 (range is 800-1050) 933X16= 14,928
Morgan is average at 1035 (range is 800-1200) 1035X16= 16,560
Quarter is average at 1175 (range is 1040-1300)1175X16=18,800
Standard is average at 1085(Range is 950-1200)1085X16=17,360
Thoroughbred is average at 1175 (Range is 1050-1350) 1175/16=18,800

There is 16 ounces to a pound.

Stallions can become mature sooner than mares. Stallions start showing signs of being sexually mature around 1 year old. Mares around 3 years old.
Stallions have been known to breed as early as 2 years old.
Though, mares usually don't breed until 3 years old. 4 years old or older is better for a mare.

1 Hand = 4 inches. So a 15H horse is 60 inches which is a 5 ft horse at the withers.

The average weight for a horse about 15H is 900-1100 lbs. No ounces.

4 inches equals 1 hand. So a 15 H horse would be 15 X 4 inches or 60 inches. 12 inches in a foot, so 60 inches divided by 12 equals 5 feet. Horses are measured from the ground up to the highest point of their withers.

The "average" weight depends on the size of the horse. Usually 900-1100 lbs.

Horses usually become sexually mature at about 3/4 years and are then ready to breed. I know +- 10 cm = 1hh but I'm not too sure about the feet. The weight depends on the size. A 15hh horse will probably weigh +- 450-600 kg. Good luck

Is this homework or 4-H quiz bowl work?
Hl got it all right..but personally I don't think I'd want a 15 h horse that only weighed 900 #, little light on muscle don't ya think. The weights going to vary depending on the type of horse your talking about. I would think a stock breed roping horse at 15 hands should weigh well over 1000 probably closer to 1250 while a 15 hand arabian would be okay at 900. You may want to mention the differntiation whether it's homework or quiz bowl.

sexually mature by 2-3 years of age

ready to breed as early as 2 but nor recommended before 5

a hand equals 4 inches so you do tha math

average weight obviously differs per horse and breed but an average Quarter Horse about 15 hands should weigh between 900-1100 lbs.

4 inches to one hand height of your horse and for a 15 hh horse that would be approx 4 feet.
