This started yesterday - if i'm on battery, it doesn't read the datacard and i can't get online. The minute I plug into the mains, it reads it!

Laptop is only three months old - battery should be good?

It's probably to do with your battery as already mentioned but it may also be your laptop power saving profile, amend it or turn it off

Your battery might be getting old and doesn't have the juice to run it. Does the battery go dead in a fairly short period too? Batterys need replaced every so often.

Probably because it automatically disables when you go on battery power. Once you are on battery power, check your "Network Connections" (or "Connect to" in the Start Menu in Windows XP then "Show all connections") and see if it is disabled. If it is, just right click and "enable" it.
