Because it's populated with human beings.
Human beings, by their very nature are usually in a state of conflict within themselves, which often translates to conflict with each other....
Human beings like to be "right", many of them like to have things "their way", some even like to have power over others.... When you get a couple people who each want these things for themselves... well, there you have it.

You might have a point. Poland means land of poles, but it looked flat to me when I was there. Maryland means land of Mary, but Mary doesn't have sovereignty over it anymore. Iceland means land of ice, yet it's actually quite productive for livestock and agriculture, and people live there in comfort.
I guess you just have to know when to be literal and when to make your point more cogently.
