This book is about a kid who was promised a puppy but he gets the runt. All I really remember is him walking through a common in London trying to lose the dog andthe dog trying to look back at him? The dog he got wasn't all that his grandfather promised.
This book made me cry as a kid and I would love to find it again.
Maybe by a Phillippa ....

Philippa Pearce. One of my favourite writers. It may indeed be "A Dog So Small." I loved "Mrs. Cockle's Cat" and my sister's all-time favourite is "Tom Midnight's Garden."
Hope you found what you were searching for, and all her books are worth a read!
Be careful with the spelling of her name when you are looking her up, it is not your average "Phillipa".

That definately sounds like 'A Dog So Small' by Phillippa Pierce...
You could try looking for it in your local book store, or you could try amazon.co.uk or even ebay.co.uk if you wanted!!
