George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series- Very complex and gritty ongoing series about a continent embroiled in civil war. Political intrigue abounds. The first book is "A Game of Thrones".

Mercedes Lackey's "Dragon Jousters" trilogy- Take a country whose premise is pre-unification Ancient Egypt, add a traumatized serf-boy desperate for revenge against his new masters, and stir in a very interesting take on dragons- and you have the beginnings of "Joust", the first book in the trilogy.

Jane Lindskold's as-yet-untitled series about the adventures of Firekeeper- A human girl, raised by wolves, is found by an expedition of humans into the uninhabited wilderness. But the girl is no ordinary girl, and the wolves who raised her are no ordinary wolves... The implications raised by Firekeeper's finding prove to be realm-shaking. A very interesting examination of what it means to be human. The first book is "Through Wolf's Eyes".

Happy reading!

The Artemis Fowl books are great there are 4 and I think the 5th just came out: 1. Artemis Fowl 2. The Arctic Incident 3. The Eternity Code 4.The Opal Deception and I think the 5th is The Lost Colony
They are about an "evil" boy genius who discovers the creatures living under the earth, http://www.artemisfowl.com/home.html

Charlie Bone is ok too, kind of like Harry Potter, gifted (magically) kids at school there are 5 of them too
1.Midnight for Charlie Bone 2.Charlie Bone and the Time Twister 3. Charlie Bone and the Invisible Boy 4. Charlie Bone and the Castle of Mirrors 5. Charlie Bone and the Hidden King

The Author of the Artemis Fowl books has a couple that are not about Artemis, The Supernaturalist and The Wish List, both really good.

Also a book called The Midnighters, the Secret Hour. About kids in a town who have special gifts only in a secret hour that starts at midnight. They all have 25 hours in a day, and have to fight some pretty nasty things in that extra hour.

Hope you enjoy them!

I'm not sure how old you are, but here are some suggestions:

Older teen and Adult: The Otherland Series by Tad Williams. This is a series of 4 books (800 - 1000 pages each) set in the future involving virtual reality and the internet. It's excellent Sci-Fi/Fantasy.

Teens: The Midnighters series by Scott Westerfeld
The Maximum Ride books by James Patterson (there are two)
The City of Ember series by Jeanne Duprau. These are all great.

Happy Reading!

Please use the 'Check Spelling' button before you submit. I feel embarrassed for you. It looks like you don't really care.

JRR Tolkien wrote a great deal more than 'The Lord of the Rings'
I've enjoyed:
The Tolkien Reader
The Silmarillion, and
The Book of Lost Tales
Also:
CS Lewis:
Out of the Silent Planet
Perelandra, and
That Hideous Strength

'The Lastborn of Elvinwood' by Linda Haldeman is good.
So is 'The Door in the Hedge' by Robin McKinley

I have written my own Harry Potter fan fiction, 'Harry Potter and His Unexpected End' that I will send to anyone who emails me from their email account where I can attach a PDF.
I have also written 'Sex, Drugs, & Rock & Roll!' which has recently been published with iUniverse. I will attach a PDF of the second chapter, 'Grand Bahama' to anyone who emails me.
Please don't email me from inside answers.yahoo.com, I cannot send you an attachment through Answers.

Try the Conan collection of stories by Robert Howard - not the later novels, you can find collections of his original short stories.

Also Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser series.

Chronicles of Amber is essentially fantasy but a bit of sci-fi as well

The Belgariad is a good series in a similar vein to the Lord of the Rings but more fun and less depressing.

I enjoyed Piers Anthony's "Immortals" series - The first book was "On a Pale Horse", I can't remember the next two books names at the moment.

The first few in Ann Rice's vampire series was also pretty good, although I didn't much care for the later ones. The first one is called "The Vampire Lestat".

If you want comedy/fantasy try "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy".
