unplug the baterry on th negative side for 10-20 minutes!! you did say reset not fix right!! if you are going to fix the problem you will have to get the codes and go from there go to your autozone is the best to go to!!

First, a little background:

All cars '96 and up use a protocol for the 'check engine' light called OBD-II (for On-Board Diagnostics - Generation II). Unlike the older OBD-I systems, OBD-II is designed to store trouble codes even in the event of a power loss. The only thing unplugging your battery will erase is your radio presets.

Reading and erasing the codes usually requires a diagnostic scanner that is OBD-II compatible. The port for the scanner is going to be under the dash, usually on the driver side (although I have seen it on the passenger side, as well). The good news is that your local auto parts store will check the code and reset it free of charge. The code could be something as innocuous as a loose gas cap, or something serious with the motor. In either case, you want to know what it is. Go to AutoZOne, Checker, or whatever you have in your area and check it out.

Once again everyone thinks that by disconnecting the battery it shuts off the Check Engine Light - IT DONT - the new vehicles have a internal memory that stores this info....

Use a scanner - dont cost you anything - go to your local parts store they can do it for you but make sure you find out that the code is related too before you shut it off...

Good Luck.

Don't listen to anyone who says "disconnect the battery..." in their post. Find the right cable, then plug in the scanner. Read the error codes, both current, pending and in memory. Write them down. Go back into the menu and choose "Reset". The light will be off. Fix the problem Test drive to insure it stays off. If it comes back on, repeat the above.
