I'm selling my car through an ad in the papers, and I'm wondering what I should do when someone comes and wants to test drive it. Should I go with them, or give them the key and let them drive it themself? Obviously my hangup is that they could steal it if I do that, but they might feel more comfortable going by themself and I might have a better chance that they sell it.

I am also selling my car. As my dad tells me you should always go with them. You never know how they might drive your car...they could do harm to your engine or such while test driving it. When you get back just step back and allow them time to talk about it if they seemed interested.

Definitely, the last thing you want is someone taking you car out on a joy ride under the presumption they are interested in buying it. If someone is really interested in the car they will not feel uncomfortable with you in it, unless they have it in their head to see how far they can smoke the tires.

If you want to let them test drive it, that's OK. But always go with them until they pay for it. It is still your car, and you wouldn't want to be without it until you have the money in your pocket!

Good point.

Normally ppl want to test drive the car for themselves w/o owner.

You can ask ppl for a job reference; or driver's license.

Also, you can give ppl a time limit 10 mins, your desired location, like a open parking lot, or safe neighboor, where you set the parameter, in which they can drive to, or go to.

I rather have the car stolen than to be found in a river 3days later. You could always just sale your car to carmax and let them do all the dirty work.

You should go with them. If you don't the people could steal it or do something to the car.
