People are being exposed to toxic chemicals through the food they eat, according to a new report.

Traces of man-made pollutants, which are linked to health problems including cancer and foetal deformities, were found in every one of 27 food products tested.

Experts at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) believe that the findings could help explain why all 352 blood samples provided by people over the last five years as part of a separate study were found to be contaminated with chemicals. or the report, called Chain Of Contamination: The Food Link, WWF tested staples, including bread, milk and eggs, from countries around Europe for eight different groups of man-made chemicals - organochlorine pesticides, PCBs, brominated flame retardants, perfluorinated chemicals, phthalates, organotins, alkylphenols and artificial musks.

That it is most likely true because it depends what is meant by "pollutants", if it means bacterial elements then food is not meant to be and never has been sterile, if it means environmental pollutants then there is little wonder the way we treat the planet!

I don't know why WWF think this is news. Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth have been trying to blow the whistle for decades.

There is no getting away from it, even polar bears in one of the worlds most pristine environments are contaminated with pcb's.
Fish and mammals at the top of the food chain have high levels of mercury making them unsafe to eat (look out Japanese).

The proposed European directive to always use the safest chemical available has merit but the downside is even more testing and research done on laboratory animals even though there are alternative research methods.

I buy organic whenever possible and grow some of my own food and filter my water to try to limit my intake of toxins. Did you know non-organic apples can be sprayed with pesticides up to 27 times and then sometimes they are waxed to make them look shinier. Farm animals are chockablock with growth hormones and antibiotics

On a lighter note check out a Bobby Bare song called Food Blues in which he concludes there is nothing safe to eat ending 'I aint eaten for a week and I feel just fine drinking beer and whisky and sweet red wine'.

One sure way to get everybody on a diet, isn't it? Also another good way of "killing" us all off! Another way of getting us to eat "organically " grown foods, without all those pesticides and pollutants! It really is "scary" what is in some of the stuff we use and the food we eat! Makes you "think" if you're smart!
