My Gran always gathered "her" spiders up in a duster and put them outside, quoting as she did so,
"If you want to live and thrive,
let a spider stay alive."
I taught the same to my three Sons, although I admit to occasionally shouting for my husband if the spider seems too big or creepy. They do keep fly numbers down.

The spiders like it there because there are plenty of insects for them to eat. To cut down on the number of spiders, you need to get rid of their food supply.

YES... go and find yourself a big oak tree and get a hand full of acorns, not the big cones that everyone thinks are acorns, put them in a dish at the back of a chair, or cupboard and you will not be bothered with them again, I'm arachnid and it works

Its been a big year for housespiders, i go round and vacuum in all the corners and under the sofa etc everyday, I dont know any other way of keeping them at bay.

Take a weekend vacation and have a professional come in and bomb the whole house including the crawl space if yo have one. then spray the outside of the foundation with bug killer.

I buy a bottle of citronella and wipe a little across the edges of the celling and skirting boards with a cloth. Works perfectly, you only need a little, so you can't smell it.

"Smoke bomb" the house. Follow the directions exactly - clean out all pets, shut all windows, cover all food... get rid of any thing that would attract them - clean up big time. Ventilate the place thoroughly afterwards.

Buy a bug bomb. You can get them in most general stores. You might have to evacuate for the day, but they'll kill anything that moves.
