After Alexander's death his generals fought over it and eventually it settled down into three states, the Antigonids in Macedonia, the Seleucids in Asia and the Ptolemies in Egypt. The Romens conquered Macedonia in 167 BC, what was left of the Seleucids in 65 BC and Egypt in 30 BC.

The kingdom of Macedon was north of Classical Greece and though they spoke Greek, they were not realy seen as Greeks by the other Greek states. Their rise to greatness began with Phillip II who laid the groundwork for a formidable army and kingdom, and by playing his hand well grew to control Greece by the time of his death. He was working to unite a fragmentary Greece under Macedonian rule when he was murdered.

His son Alexander then used the war against Persia as a unifying force for Greece as his father had planned. By the time of his death his Empire stretched to the Indus, and the great Persian empire was no more.

However after his death the dynastic wars of the successors set the kings against themselves and as they fought a new power grew in the western Mediterranean- Rome.

By 149 Rome had fought 3 Macedonian wars and fully conquered Greece and made Macedonia a province.
