Should we be rewarded for having children and getting married? If nobody is rewarded or penalized for the choices they make, would that be MORE fair? I hear all of the time that women make less than men, because they could have children and quit their jobs. ALthough I know damn well that isn't the reason, shouldn't a woman who chooses NOT to have a family be granted equal pay for equal work? Or at least recieve free birth control? Seriously, I am libertarian for a reason...

leo, I hear what you are saying, but it isn't a luxury to not have children, it is a choice. One that takes investment in family planning to achieve. Perhaps birth control should be a write off! And I agree on the school thing. $6000 a year in property taxes because of the schools...

no jetfighter, it doesn't sound fair. But sometimes we pay for BAD choices that we make. That is why I have not yet married or had children. Those were choices you made, same as me.

bornagain, I know EXACTLY how much they cost! That is why I don't have them! I don't need a reality check, but many people who can't afford to have children do! LMFAO. Nice assumption. I also didn't say that you have it so easy, just that I pay MORE taxes than you do. And those with children use more than I do. Do you use the public school system? Yep, I pay for that. Nobody made you have a child. Get over it, and stop expecting that your decision (no doubt for selfish reasons) should be subsidized by me.

OK pregojess, I don't get free birth control, and you have to pay your share in taxes. Deal? We all made our choices.

PLDFK...I appreciate your answer, and probably the best argument so far...but I pay my Social Security taxes, and I pay my insurance. So I pay for those services as well...now, if that doctor was free later in life? sign me up. And don't forget all of the prisoners people with children are bringing up. I will pay for them, too.

I agree that tax incentives are outdated today - we don't need warm bodies to fill up the country anymore, we're overcrowded now.

one reason why tax payers that have children either pay less taxes or more back at the end of the year is because raising children cost alot. Raising kids cost alot more then what most non parents think. I dont believe there should be free birth control just because you choose not to have kids that is your choice so you can be responsible for the birth control pills. I do not agree that people that do not have children should have to pay school taxes. I do think that is unfair. As far as wages go if you dont feel you are bieng payed enough for the work you do then u need to talk to your boss about it. A father can make the same choice and stay at home to take care of the kids and let the wife work. There are alot of men who do that. I believe the wages has to do with your employer.

I agree with you although I feel I need to point out that single men pay more taxes also. How about this one. I was divorced for a time and my ex got the kids so I was paying taxes at the single rate and paying taxes on child support she got. She on the other hand qualified as head of household, got the kids as dependents, and got 10000 a year from me tax free. The kids were all in school so she didn't need to be at home to care for them but didn't have to work full time because of what she got from me and all her tax breaks. Sound fair to you?

people who are single should pay more taxes, because people with children are using most of their finances in taking care of their kids! Ask your parents if it wasn't financially straining at times. Do you even know how much it costs for diapers, formula and clothes every single year. And just because you're not married or don't have any children, don't try to accuse us of having an easier time and getting 'all the breaks' because we get tax breaks for being married and having children...trust me it's not easy at all.
You really need a reality check. Talk to other adults or even senior citizens. You'll realize that you're pretty narrow-minded and selfish on this whole idea.

Ideally, taxes should not be used to influence behavior. They should be designed as a fund-raising measure only. The reality is quite different. So, to answer your question, it would be more fair if taxes did not reward or penalize behavior.
And yes, separate from your first question, there are laws against sex discrimination.

There is a very simple answer to this....children are our future, whether we have are own or not. You choose not to have children, but one day it will be our children paying taxes so that you can be cared for in your old age. Any one of us with children may be raising the doctor that could one day save your life or make your life easier. You need to stop look at them as only children and remember that they will one day be tax paying citizens.

It could be worse. What if the IRS decided that all family income must be divided among all family members and then each person had to file his own tax with no exemptions. Now that seems fair.

The government has long used tax policy to promote what they consider good social strategy. They believe marriage is good for everyone and that they want to reward those who comply with those ideas

I chose to not have children, and always have been paid equitably to my male counterparts. My thoughts are that we get taxed more because its a luxury to not have kids. No whining, no toys laying all over, don't have to deal with schools, we don't have to lend them money or the car. We get our rewards from keeping our sanity and youth. I do hate paying those school taxes though. That bugs me the most.
