Not dumb, just ignorant. And even ignorance can be cured with proper education in international history and current events. Unfortunately, for many Americans, the costs of travel to other countries besides border countries like Canada and those in South America are prohibitive, and even then it can be expensive. It costs $250 round trip airfare for one adult from Denver, Colorado to New York City during the "off season." Young people of college age usually don't have the money to spend for airfare because they need to work while in college to supplement their living expenses. Many young adults cannot afford to live in an apartment unless they have roommates, so more and more young people are living with their parents. And as adults, the costs of a family vacation are prohibitive so most Americans don't go far from home for their vacations. When you look at the cost of living in America, it has doubled in some areas and tripled in others. Salaries are at 1980 levels, but housing and cost of living have doubled and tripled since then. A new Ford Escort cost $10,000 in 1980. It now costs $20,000. Most families can't make it in America anymore unless both parents work. And remember, although our taxes are lower than those in Europe, we have no national health care and the costs of medical insurance or medical costs if a person doesn't have insurance are prohibitive. There is no doubt the poor are getting poorer in America, and the middle class are also gettng poorer. I wouldn't know if the rich are getting richer.
The unfortunate fact too is that the American school system does not emphasize the importance of travel or learning foreign languages. School classes through high school don't emphasize the importance of exposure to other cultures. It definitely dumbs down young Americans in general. Federal law in America requires teachers to teach "special" children with learning disabilities in the same classroom with their other students. Teachers are required to teach to the lowest common denominator rather than gear classwork to the brightest students. Because of this many Americans are choosing to take their children out of public school and either home school them or send them to private schools. Anyway, I could go on and on, but nothing will change unless education-minded people are voted into office to serve in Congress and the Senate who will sponsor bills to change present laws.

Not dumb, culturally ignorant. Anyone that thinks the we are the center of the universe needs to travel. Yes, I believe our way of life has major advantages over many countries other countries have a variety of advantages over the US. Many Americans are bigoted because they haven't traveled outside of our borders. That's a shame because there is a lot to learn out there.

I think there is a lot of ignorance in this country. One of the reasons is the christian religion. It prevents people from being open minded unless forced to do so. I am not saying that every christian american is dumb. But I have traveled all over the world and never have I met people so closed minded as americans in general. People from poorer countries may not have all that we do here, but they are more informed given there limited resourses.(save people living in villages etc)
The same is true for the muslim religion. They are not allowed to think for themselves. again I am not referring to the thousands of professionals from muslim origon.

I don't think that they are dumb, I think they are missing out on the experience of learning about the differences of the world and the beauty of different cultures.

I think most people that don't get the experience to travel are limiting themselves to a narrow view of the world and their environment. Dumb no, biased and ignorant...maybe.
