Add 1/2 of baking soda to a large soup bowl. Mix in 1 cup of water and stir well. Nuke on high for 3-5 minutes. Remove bowl. Wipe down inside surfaces of microwave. This even works on burnt microwave popcorn odors.
If the smell is persistent, you might have to try again one more time.

Put a couple of teaspoonfuls of lemon juice into a pyrex bowl with water. Put on full power for a few minutes, (depending on your microwave). Allow to stand without opening door for a few minutes so that the steam wafts around. Finally wipe with a clean cloth and leave the door open for air to circulate for a while. Should do the trick.

Baking soda works great... You can mix a couple of table spoons with some warm water and clean the inside.
If there is alot of caked material on the inside of the microwave, I would try boiling some water with baking soda, and then clean the inside...
You can also leave a box in the microwave between uses.

Try boiling some water with lemon juice or vinegar. Let it steam generously.
If this doesn't work, try boiling water with a little ammonia... but have plenty of ventilation and don't inhale the fumes. Ammonia is a good odor killer and it doesn't leave its own odor behind.
And if THAT doesn't work, I'd use Smells Be Gone, an odorless spray. I'[ve seen it in hardware stores and on line.

Try microwaving a lemon for about 10 minutes. Cut it open and microvae it to boil and vaporize the citric acid, but stop it before it burns again.
The citric acid is a good cleaner, and will get to all the surfaces that got covered with smells (places inside the microwave you can't get to).

Try this - a bowl of water with lemon scented washing up liquid - heat it up in the microwave until the water boils. Leave it to cool down. The inside gets coated with lemony fragrance and is then easier to clean and freshen up.

Squeeze some fresh lemon juice into water and put it in the microwave until it boils. This should remove all other smells.
