It depends on the forum or the type of correspondence. I don't like reading blogs or message board posts that use those abbreviations in almost every line. A "WTF" once in a while is no big deal to me, but when I am reading a response to a post about a TV show that looks like:
OMG!! U R DA BEST. C U L8R 4 DRNX. L0G4N ROX. WTF!!!BBQ!!!!1111
They may be easy to type for the poster but they are difficult to read, especially when they are in ALL CAPS. Now if you are sending an email to your close friends or chatting on instant messenger then that is not a problem. When you type "UR" or "U" in a public forum, you run the risk of people not taking you seriously.

wtf is much more polite than typing what it actually means. It's not bad informally although it bugs the hell out of me when I'm talking to my teenage sister on msn. I dont mind wtf, brb and lmao but too much text typing is a bad thing if you ask me.

In chatrooms or instant messenger conversations, it is quite normal. Not in e-mails or other serious documents though.

My own personal opinion: those are not words and it stinks when people use them in any sort of correspondence.
