alleles and genes mean the same.
"allele" was the term used by Mendel
gene is the term used by modern day scientists
a gene is nothing but a part of a DNA. or a segment of a DNA,DNA consists of nucleotides which are the individual units of the same i mean DNA.nucleotides consists of base sugar and phospate.

Pretty sure they're talking about splice varients. One gene can produce several different proteins based on the way the exons are spliced.
I could be way wrong though.
