(1).A motherboard is a printed circuit board used in a personal computer. It is also known as the mainboard and occasionally abbreviated to mobo or MB. The term mainboard is also used for the main circuit board in this and other electronic devices. A typical motherboard provides attachment points for one or more of the following: CPU, graphics card, sound card, hard disk controller, memory (RAM), and external peripheral devices. Well th emotherboard is the equivalent of the human spine. ti connects all the parts togeather so they can work togeather. If you've looked inside your computer (if it's a desktop) It's the big huge board that every thing is snaped or connected to. Approx price can range according to what type of board, what manufacturer and what features you want/need. You can't just buy any board. You have to match your processor socket. You can't by a socket A for a socket 757 (Socket is for an AMD XP Burton 2800, and a Socket 757 is for an Intel P4 With HT). The socket type s marked on the socket itself (where the processor is located). Try contacting your manufacturer first. They will be able to supply you with details. If their prices are too high go to places like tigerdirect or Newegg for pricing. Try Cnet for reviews and more pricing options.

Also there is a chance you could hav a fried processor. If you do better to buy a new pc than replace those two parts. Processor usually costs 2X the cost of the motherboard.

"A motherboard is the main circuit board of a computer. All electrical components plug into the motherboard."

"[The motherboard is] the "heart" of your PC -- it handles system resources (IRQ lines, DMA channels, I/O locations), as well as core components like the CPU, and all system memory. It accepts expansion devices such as sound and network cards, and modems."

If it is "shot" it means it is broken. You can get them from $5-400 or more depending on what you want. In the past a good motherboard has cost me around $160 (good enough to play the newest games etc). But you might need a new CPU as well...that would raise the cost.

The main circuit board of a microcomputer. The motherboard contains the connectors for attaching additional boards. Typically, the motherboard contains the CPU, BIOS, memory, mass storage interfaces, serial and parallel ports, expansion slots, and all the controllers required to control standard peripheral devices, such as the display screen, keyboard, and disk drive. Collectively, all these chips that reside on the motherboard are known as the motherboard's chipset. ...

It's the circutry in the computer that everything plugs into to run. When it's shot you will end up paying more to get it repaired than what the computer is worth.
