Well i don't know in what context he used it but zeitgeist means t the intellectual and cultural climate of an era. So I'm assuming he's reffering to the air of excitment and wonder around in biology around the time of the introduction of Darwin's theory.

Zeitgeist is German for a view of the world, so Darwinian Zeitgeist would be evolution.

It is a German word. Zeit meaning "time" and Geist meaning "ghost". Zeitgeist means the spirit of the age or times. The trend of thought and counter-thought specific to certain temporo-spatial environs.
