what is the geographical setting of the little mermaid? Is it based on an actual town/area?

ever since I have seen the little mermaid I noticed that it seemed to be set in such beautiful surroundings. So I was just wondering if these surroundings were based on any actual town or area that really exists anywhere in the world, and if so is it in the United States? Or are there any areas of the United States that are like that area (possibly on the eastern shore)?

i know there's an area where hans christian anderson wrote the story, and they put up a Little Mermaid statue on the beach or something....? :)
