Avoid AOL if at all possible! They don't tell you about the rubbish they load up onto your computer and I mean rubbish! AOL has a habit of taking over your computer, like a virus but you're paying for it! Have a look at NTL/Telewest/BT websites for their offers. NTL has unlimited BB usage. I'd rather pay a couple of quid more than having all the garbage AOL dumps on your computer!

It depends what you want to do with your connection.
AOL is OK apart from the fact you end up with all the AOL software installed, good luck if you ever try to get rid of it!!!
Is 1mb a fast enough speed when you also want unlimited usage? Believe me that isn't as true as it seems cos AOL will cap you if you use it too much.
is Price your main consideration? BT broadband will get you faster speeds, within a cap, with all the other extras you mention, but at a higher price.
Is your area Cable enabled? NTL etc. You can get some great deals including TV.

Yip. I'm with Orange.
For £35 a month I got a free wireless router, 2 usb wireless adapters and a Samsung E900 with 550 cross network anytime minutes and unlimited texts.
You pay for the mobile contract and the wireless internet is free. No hidden extras, fab offer, still available.
It does cost more, but if you're running a mobile, chances are you pay more than £35 a month anyway, therefore, massive savings, and Orange has better reception than most other companies.
You also get free web space and up to 10 email addresses and there's no installation charge or visit. They send you the box, mine arrived in a couple of days, you plug it in and away you go.

I agree with the second answer from Dude somebody... and the deal I get is better. I'm with supanet paying £13 a month broadband with free weekend and evening phone calls thrown in, 20 MB webspace etc, see www.supanet.com they are sure to have a wireless option. 1MB Download is so last year, baseline is upwards of 2MB now, supanet quote up to 8MB. Read the small print before you quote 'unlimited' you may find you have to 'share' the unlimited option at peak times.
And AOL has got to be the only virus you pay to have installed, as it compromises the windows operating system. If you change your mind later you will have to reinstall your operating system before you change ISP, and for a novice that may mean you lose all your data (ie photo) files...
Plus I'm guessing your laptop didn't come with installation discs...

It depends on what is available in your area.
This sounds like DSL, you may be to far from their office to get it.
If you can, get cable, it is alot faster. Fiber is even better.
I save more than the cost of the service finding better prices on items I buy online rather than the brick and mortar store.
As for wireless, All services come into your house and can be plugged into a wireless router. You may want to research routers and find a better one. Usually free stuff is not any good, why do you think they are giving them away? They weren't selling so the ISP bought the whole warehouse and gives them out. I don't think anyone providing broadband limits you in hours any more. If you start running a server and continually max out your bandwidth, they may not let you get away with being a typical residential customer. That is what happened to my friend who sells downloadable images.

Your considering AOL??
HAHAHA
Try www.demon.co.uk
Go for their Home8000 service Its 8meg download and £19.99 a month plus unlimited usage.
There is no wireless router provided but they are reasonably cheap... ebay do them for under £40.
AOL have a very bad and slow servicebut with demon I never once needed to call tech support and never once was I left with slow downloads or no internet.

No matter how good the deal, it comes with AOL software requirement. Putting AOL on your computer is like pouring sugar in your auto's petrol tank. The outcome is never good.
