There are as many answers to this as there are 'friendships.' But then, it also depends on those times when events cause friendship to be put to the test and it either fails, or you realise some thing, and it changes, it takes on a more significant meaning for you... you become 'Friends.
It can become a 'love' of sorts - though there is (for men) the DANGER that this word 'Love' could take on a sexual context, and that's not an Ok thing.
As for whether there are 'Limits,' each one has to find out for their selves through the course of time.
Like any other (ALL) relationships, they are best not labelled, as what others write on these labels can create their own problems for all concerned ....because, in the end, all relationships are about the 'shades of meaning' (shades of grey, or blue or whatever colour you choose).

Friendship is caring for some one other than yourself.
The limits put on frienships are the limits set by the friends
I'm sure that is no help but I do not know where you are coming from or trying to get to with this question.

Real friendship is absolute trust. There can be no doubts in a tru friendship. There can be no suspicion. There can be no secrets. There can be no holding back---everything that is mine is your and vise verse. There must be the willingness to sacrifice everything, including life. These are hard qualifications to fulfill, which is why finding a true friend is very difficult, particularly in a world like the one we live in today in which everybody seems to be out for themselves. They are out there, though----you just have to spend some time and effort to find them. When you find one, do not trade him/her for anything, because a true friend is more valuable than all the gold and precious jewels in the world.

You should put limits on anything that makes you feel uncomfortable whether it is in a friendship, love or even familial relationship.
