Tummy time can be started whenever but needs to begin before the 6th month. Simple things such as lying on the floor with your child on your chest can be included in the all important tummy time. To be quite honest though when a child learns to roll is really when tummy time becomes totally initialized. Doctors just want you to start earlier so your infant doesn't develop a deformity. the slight deformity is when a child's head is flat in the back from constant pack lying while their head is still soft and pliable. In the most severe cases it has caused slight brain damage. at the same time this is a recent study (within the last ten years) and many cultures would never let a child on their stomach until they learned to do it themselves when they roll over. Sorry that was a lengthy response to your easy question

ANY!!! even if it's just the baby lying on your chest..the more time spent playing on thier bellys the more they learn. Younger babies have a very limited sight distance, belly time lets them explore thier new world up close. All three of my kids were sprawled on a blanket when ever they were not being held, changed, fed. I've never used a swing/ bouncy seat or the like. The younger the baby the couch or bed next to you if nice .. and once they get mobile ( rolling, creeping) the floor is safest. BUt enjoy tummy time. get down there with you baby and play as well.. jsut look at your lil one and enjoy the quiet.. it won't last much longer :)

I work in pediatrics and you baby should start getting tummy time at 2 months. If you go to www. cranialtech.com you can get more information. You give you baby tummy time to prevent plagiocephaly. Just remember no tummy time while sleeping. Babies must sleep on their backs to prevent sids. Also on the web page above you will be able to read about tummy time activities.

When i had both my children the doctor said to start belly time as soon as possible it helps develop neck muscles......My baby is only 2 weeks and she has belly time for 15 minutes a day and I can notice the difference her head doesn't flop around that much only when she is tired....Just make sure to lay down beside them just so that your baby knows you are there.

Personally I had my son on his tummy from day one! Actually--my dad would put him on his tummy and I'd just watch. He would cry in frustration but it was just that--frustration. It wasn't because he was hungry, wet, or needed something. It's okay for babies to cry--my dad used to say "it's good for their lungs." He ended up rolling over at two months from his belly to his back. At four months he was an expert at rolling both ways. And at five months he started crawling. He could sit up at five and a half months. Now at seven months he's pulling himself up to stand. I don't know if this is concidered "normal" but you know how mothers are--we all think we have the best baby--LOL! If you feel comfortable with getting him on his tummy--go for it--it's good for him/her! Best of luck!

My Dr. recommended to start at my daughter's two-week check up. She is now 4 weeks old and enjoys tummy time everyday and is doing great holding her head up for short periods of time. It is best to start as early as possible to strengthen neck and shoulder muscles.
And for the person who said they could suffocate themselves...you do tummy time while they are awake and you are with them, they can move their head from side to side quite easily. As long as they are on the floor, not a fluffy blanket, they will be just fine. Most Dr. will confirm this.

It is best to start ASAP so they get used to it. I used my son's Boppy pillow and propped him on top with his arms over it and put toys in frone of him. It also works to roll up a towel and lay them on top. If you wait until the baby can support it's own head they will fight tummy time.

When my baby was like 2 months i would put her on her belly but I would check on her constantly. And also want a good tip my baby would sleep longer when she was on her belly. But their is a lot of parents that don't like doing that,it's all up to you.Just make sure that your baby doesn't have anything around her so she wont suffocate.

At any age is good..it help build neck muscles..if your talking infant it is still very good for tummy time, just have to watch them..if they fall alseep you are supposed to put them on their back. However my son slept best on his tummy..he is now 6 and still sleeps on his belly. but it is good for them at any age. just do what you feel safe and comfortable in doing.
