Easy, because he is selfish, self-centered, and loves the attention. One of the first rules responsible, unselfish people learn when they get married and have a family is that you have to eliminate all unnecessary risk so that you don't leave your wife a widow or your children fatherless. Prior to my marriage I used to love to rock climb. Once I got married I stopped because I thought too highly of my wife to sacrifice her peace of mind on the altar of MY entertainment. I took up tennis, golf, and swimming, and other low-risk activities. I learned from my parents that my rights must always take second seat to my responsibilities. Apparently Richard Hammond's parents never taught him that.
I certainly hope you don't rewards the morons who claim that all life is risky and all risk is equal. That is a ridiculous statement. If that were the case then insurance would cost the same for a school teacher as it does for an astronaut or race car driver. It doesn't and WHY doesn't it? Because not all risks are equal and not all risks are necessary. Only an idiot would claim that walking across the street is as risky as skydiving or rock climbing.

Your life is at risk everyday, so far my house and the next two houses have been hit by cars and the walls have had to be rebuilt, you can get run over just crossing the road, too many maniacs on the road, Richard Hammond knew what he was doing everything for safety was used, it was a flat tyre that made the car go out of control, not his driving. I wish him a full recovery and no doubt he will want to go back behind the wheel again when he is fully recovered.

How indeed...this is moving depressingly into 'Steve Irwin' territory - two young guys, devoid of fear, and as a result, not too thoughtful on what happens next. Mr. Hammond may have presumed this was just another thing he will triumph, and will bow humbly to his many fans as the popular press will do the same with pseudo-sexy prose on his (British) bravery. Well - the press have a story...but not the one Mr. Hammond wanted (nor the doctors and nurses at the Leeds hospital, I suspect).
Looks like some will never learn.

Why do we drive to work in our car or travel on the motor way each day? Why do astronauts go into space?
Why do the police/army/navy/firemen do what they do?
Its part of life!
We do things every day that force us to risk our own lives either at work or something we do as a hobby!

Life is a risk. he could have a boring office job and he could still be killed in a car crash or by a hit and run or something. Hell, he could live at home and never step outside his door but he could still be electrocuted by something. At least he's done something with his life instead of fearing things and not taking any risks.

You could say you risk your life just walking out of your door everyday. You can't live like that. It's bad whats happened and i hope he will recover from it ok, but life is too short not to try new things.

He know the risks, so his wife does, some of the people who have answered should perhaps look at what they do that may be risky before they judge other people.Like people have said it is a risk getting up and going out of your door every day. I wish him well.

I agree, it's hard to understand. Everyday risks are one thing, deliberately doing something obviously dangerous is something else. With all the safety precautions in the world, what he did was obviously dangerous. But people often turn a blind eye to danger, via the "it won't happen to me" syndrome. I think men, particularly, are programmed by nature to be ready to take life-threatening risks.

the same way that steve irwin did, so as to give the viewers something exciting to watch, i don't think they should go to those extremes for anyone, something needs to be done to stop presenters from putting there lives at risk, i like top gear but not if the best presenter they have is going to kill himself doing something stupid like that

i like all of them, yet for various reasons. Jeremy is definetly an orangutan yet he makes me snicker. Richard is beautiful with somewhat boy glee approximately him. James is the smart one that i could choose to in trouble-free terms take a seat and confer with. those adult adult males have the suitable activity in the international, bar none!
