There is no doubt that there is a link between committing violence and enjoying violent images. It doesn't mean that one causes the other.

The games and movies and lyrics might reflect a violent society, but they don't cause it.

I think there have been many studies showing a definite correlation between how much violent entertainment a child is exposed to and what kind of behavior they will exhibit even directly after the event. It doesn't mean that one or two or even twenty hours of playing or listening will produce a psychopath or murderer. What it does is desensitize people to violence, so that they are less likely to help those around them when there is a genuine need, small or great. I myself have noticed the response time of co-workers listening to rap music is much, much slower when people ask them for assistance, versus the co-workers who are listening to country music in the background. It doesn't mean my co-workers turned into violent people upon being asked to help with something or follow up with something, it just means something about what they were listening to seemed to reinforce a delay in responding to the needs of others. That alone should make people think about the effect of what they are using for entertainment. See link below for historical studies done since about 1974 or so on how there is a definite link between violent TV viewing and how children behave. I learned about several of these studies while getting a degree in psychology over 15 years ago.

There is blame to be placed, but not all of it is on the entertainment business.

Some people already have issues with a violent personality an channel it through the music they listen to and the games they play. That's no problem - at least they're not hurting anybody.

Other times you see an eleven, twelve year old boy playin' Grand Theft Auto where he gets to beat a hooker to death with a baseball bat. Then he gets to hit her while she's down, 'cause the pool of blood keeps gettin' bigger an bigger. Ain't that a riot?

In my opinion, parents need to closer monitor what their kids are gettin' themselves involved with an' what games they play. 'Cause yes, some games will screw up a child's mind if they're too young to handle it. An' it's not the game developer's fault. It's the fault of the guy who sells it to a kid who's too young, the parent's fault for giving it to the kid who's too young, or the older brother/friend who bought it for him.

But if you're an ADULT who gets screwed up by a videogame or rap lyrics, then YOU WERE ALREADY SCREWED UP before you started playin' that game an' listening to those lyrics. No sympathy for screwed up adults who don't know how to handle themselves.

Nope. We had Psychopaths and murders long before we had violent lyrics, games, movies and TV shows. That is just part of human nature, a sad part, but a part.

The only thing those things have done, is bring that knowledge to more people via movies and TV, lyrics and whatnot. It also has given society a focus for what to blame society on for something that has been happening for thousands of years. Kinda sad really, that people have to point fingers at new things to blame for age old problems.....

I do not agree. I think that is a myth created and generated by the media and people who have some trouble believing in free will. I think it's insulting to the rest of us who have control over our actions and take responsibility for them to hear other people try to blame these issues on music, TV, movies, etc... Just another scapegoat I guess...

Deal with it, we are not a society/nation/world of decent beings, there are people out there that are not right, that enjoy violence/being violent, that rape, beat, murder other people. It happens. And it is no one's fault but their own!

I suppose, depending on the situation, you could blame society for how a particular person turned out, but other than that, everyone operates of their own free will, you can't blame media for that! Maybe you could blame any one of your gods for allowing us free will! There's an idea. Then you won't have to blame it on yourself.

Well I don't know if those things alone are creating this, but it certainly is not helping any.

A lot of kids now a day are not morals, they are let run the streets and their parents are not checking up on them. In my opinion most of this is caused by babies having babies. When you are 13 and 14 years old having babies, you do not know how to parent, so you rely on what you want, well what teenager wants rules and regulations so why would they enforce that onto their child. If you have no morals instilled in you , you can not teach them to your child, If you were not parented as a child, you have no way of knowing how to parent. In my opinion, that is what is causing psychopaths and murderers.

video games are being blamed for violent crimes (and that i will confer with the Grand robbery automobile sequence) because video games are meant to be relaxing. once you're taking a seat and play a pastime like Grand robbery automobile, the position you run round and kill human beings and thieve issues (in reality), some human beings discover it relaxing. because it truly is relaxing interior the game, they are inspired to work out if it truly is well worth it interior the genuine international. so as that they bypass out and commit a criminal offense and then blame it on the video games they performed (it truly is a very undesirable excuse to commence with). The police consider this excuse even with the indisputable fact that, and that is what gave video games one of those adverse stereotype.

This is my opinion. If young children are allowed to play violent games, watch violent films and listen rap it desensitizes them and can warp their conscience. They grow up enjoying violence and the thrill it gives them. Children's minds are like sponges in that they soak up everything going on around them and if this is the norm then it can damage them psycologically. They may not become murders but they can become dark people who perhaps torture animals and continue to listen to that dreadful music.

i disagree with this statement 110%. i am at the moment studying media arts at university and have come across this debate before. it is typical though-every time a random murder, crime or social problem exists or is taking place the media is always made the scapegoat. to many people it is easy pickings for them. it is constantly blamed for the rationalisation and steady increase in gun and knife crime, rape and other offences in our neighbourhoods and on the streets when in truth the blame and accountability lies with the parents and his/her's actions. therefore, why should the media industry have to always defend itself from every slur and criticism targeted towards them? you can disagree with me with this but in my view, video games, rap lyrics and films DOES NOT encourage and provoke people to become psychos, killers, abusers, drug dealers, rapists etc. if parents cannot be bothered to keep tabs on their children's behaviour, monitor their viewing and listening habits and teach them right from wrong and alas continue pointing the finger at tv executives, producers and writers for society's ills, then they sure need to be.

i listen to many rap songs and its lyrics, and yet i don't go round behaving violently and kill people in sight. besides, even though they do resonate and depict real life, shouldn't mean you go and cause havoc everywhere you go.

and all this would start to feel like communist china, in terms of the way they control and decide what to and what not to televise. because of their stiringent controls on the media, many tv show makers and news reporters have difficulty getting their work across to be shown for fear of offending the communist regime and going to jail. should we have to revert to this and do we want the UK and western media to end up this way? of course not.

the blame as i said lies with the individual- if they are insane and stupid enough to behave violently and reinact a scene they saw in a film, then they are the ones who have the problem and need to be condemned- not the director, the film industry, the actors or the film/tv show itself.

It is possible. There have been no in depth studies done of this. Those that have been done have often been sponsored by one side of the argument or the other making them suspect.

Some of the ills of the world that look new are not; they are only more widely reported. I would be very interested to see a truly independent study done of this especially in North America.
