My husband comes from a long line of wind bags who like to talk just to hear themselves talk-- and LOUDLY! How can I get him to speak at an acceptable decibel level and only when he has something pertinent to say? Or should I just get some nice, discreet earplugs?

LOL! I love the answer, put your boob in his mouth! Seriously though, I know exactly how you feel. My husband does the same thing. Even out in public he talks so loud and I don't want everyone hearing our business. I tell him though. I say "honey, shush your talking too loud". If he isn't super sensitive he wont care. If he still doesn't get it, try one of those small tape recorders when you are with several people. Really, some people are just like this and can't really "fix it". You just have to remind him when it's inappropriate.

You knew he was loud before you married him. If he has not changed in all this time I doubt that he will. Some people are just loud by nature. I am sure he has other good qualities that out way him being loud. Talk to him about it and when your out with friends or in the public give him a sign that he is to loud. Make it affectionate so he will enjoy being quite.

When he starts talking to you just ask him "why are you yelling" most of the time my husbands says oh, sorry. If it doesn't work then purchase the earplugs he will definately get the hint.

Try to speak softly, almost a whisper, when speaking to him and see if he ends up copying you. When people whisper, the other person always thinks that automatically they are saying something in secret and will lower their voice.

Good luck!

Tell him about it. He is your husband, you should be able to be open with him. Say something like "Honey, can you lower your voice." Say it sweetly! Do it often till he gets the point.

tell him abt the problem and its consequences. tell him if he does that in public it embarrases you. let him know talking quietly will make him sound smarter. stop him the next time he does that, correct him right there!

You should just come out and tell him. He is your husband afterall and should be able to take it AND he should be caring enough to do what you ask.
