My bf and I and his ex and her husband all get along great, our 5 kids between us, stay over at the others house all the time, but some of my friends accuse us of being dyfunctional. Are we?

Maybe but at least you are trying to keep the peace for the kids.

Don't worry about it. I've been told the same thing. My ex husband and I have a great relationship and he and my boyfriend get along great. My ex comes over to our house and hangs on now and then and watches my boyfriends kid too sometimes when he has our children just so the kids all get a chance to play with each other. It works for all of us and makes our lifes a lot less stressful since we can all get along.

"Dysfunctional" is such a stupid term! It's like saying you're "abnormal", and what is that? Basically, all they're saying is that you're not like them.

The bottom line: if it works for you guys and everybody in the family is okay with it, don't change the arrangement because an outsider thinks it's weird.

You have to decide for YOURSELVES what works best and go with that. Don't worry about what anybody else says until they've walked in your shoes awhile.

BTW: most families would love to have that kind of ability to get along, if only for the sake of the kids. Count yourselves lucky!

It is very grown up and also amazing that you all get along so well. I wish you all the luck, not any disfunctional goings on as I see it.. I see a group that accepts themselves as friends rather than spouses and BF& GF and fighting about it...The kids will learn to be more easy going as they get to see the parents happy, not at war with ex and GF and BF at each others throats too...Good luck and be friends. Life is too short to live with grudges and hatred.

I suppose in comparison to the rest of the abnormal world you would be! I would LOVE to have a good relationship with my ex, but I would be made Pope before that happened!

Kudos to all of you for having such a wonderfully healthy relationship! I certainly envy you! Just don't consider moving in together - THAT would be really weird.

It isn't typical, but your kids are very lucky not to have to endure the usual fighting that goes on in broken relationships. Keep doing whatever it is you're doing and feel blessed because of it.

I opened this thinking I was going to read some long "Jerry Springer" like saga. No, you are all mature in your approach to this. Keep up the good and FUNctional work!

Your friends are not as emotionally mature as the players in this situation, and should be allowed no opinion in it, anyway.

Everyone has their own thing that works for them. What your friends are seeing is a situation that they cannot see working for themselves, therefore, they cannot see how it can work for you.
Your situation in not unusual and far from dysfunctional. By doing this, you are teaching your kids that healthy friendships are valuable.
