My son and now my grandson get periodic nosebleeds for no apparent reason. I've now learned that this can be caused simply from a deficiency of Vitamin C. If you should choose to supplement their diet with Vitamin C insure that it is of the highest quality and purity.
Hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me with questions.

I had this alot when I was growing up. The best and fastest way to stop the bleeding is to make a tissue paper plug and insert it in the bleeding nostril, then apply pressure against the outside that will stop the bleeding. Continue applying pressure for a few minutes. Do not tilt your head back and swallow any blood, as others have suggested, nor should you blow your nose, it is bleeding because of open cappillaries or blood vessels, blowing just makes the ruptured vessels worse. Most likely, routine bleeding is from allergies, dry air, sudden change in temperature, ie, they wake up and wash their face with cool water, and have a nose bleed, or from some sort of straining. A change in altitude can cause bleeding, especially in a helicopter going up and down. My problem didn't slow down until I was in my thirties. When the plug is removed, it usually will bring an attached blood clot with it and possibly clear fluid snot, kinda of gross, but really works well. I usually retired somewhere private as not to gross out everyone else. But over the years, it has proven the fastest and best way to stop the bleeding. When he has his confidence up about it, he will be able to reassure others around him, that maybe freaking out and pannicking with all sorts of advice, like you already received, "hold your head back, pinch, ice under lip, cold wash rags on your neck or forehead, etc, etc, etc". I hope this helps, oh yeah, when I was in junior high, some bully would hit me in the face and give me a bloody nose, for him it was a sign of victory because he gave me a bloody nose, for me, it was just another bloody nose. When he put his hands down cause he had won, I had my turn and turned his victory into his stupid defeat. Thanks for bringing that moment of triumph back to my memory.

I used to get them alot when I was a kid. Mostly, it was from dryness, so my mom put a humidifier in my room (can get for $20 @ WalMart). That worked, but my nosebleeds were also triggered by other factors like altitude change (I went up the side of a mountain in Pittsburgh once and got one), or chlorine (if I swam without noseplugs, I lasted 10 minutes). As far as getting rid of them, my uncle (an emt) told me to pinch the skin at the bridge of my nose. After about 5 minutes it was over. He also told me NOT to lie down. Although this does stop the bleeding quicker, you run the risk of the blood draining into your throat and elsewhere (not good, especially in a younger child).

It could be allergies or dry air, presuming there was no injury, and yes, it is perfectly normal.
Most of the time, just pinching the nose closed for a few minutes will stop it. If it happens often or won't stop bleeding, then you need to have a doctor look at it.

Both my kids have gotten nose bleeds since they were around about 4 or 5 years of age. Reason normally is dry air. I put water on heaters / stove now.

Quite common in kids. My daughter slept with a towel on her pillow from age 5 to 8 due to frequent nosebleeds. If re-occurs frequently, mention to your doctor next time the kid is in, but don't waste your money taking a kid to the dr for just a nosebleed unless it is anterior--bleeding back into the nasal passages. In that case take the kid to the ER.

It could be because of allergies, my little girl (21 months) get nose bleeds because of her allergies. Because of the dry air also. Just pinch the nose and hopefully that will help.

when you get a nose bleed it means the air is very dry, best thing to do is blow all of the blood out. some people say put your head back and pinch your nostrals closed. personally i hate that because when you put your head back the blood goes down your throat not a very pleasant taste unless your John Wayne Gaci and like the taste

The #1 reason is fingers being put up there too much (very very common in children- known as nose picking), dry air is another culprit, I spray my daughter's nose with saline spray (they even have gel) to keep membranes moist........If it truly bothers you, go to the doctor to make sure there is no medical condition.
Good Luck :-)
