Without knowing where you are from and what time of year you plan to travel, I would suggest the following itineraries, based on my own travels:
Massachussets - Spend a few days in Boston walking the Freedom Trail. Visit the North Shore, Salem and Plymouth. Spend the night in Falmouth and take the ferry to Martha's Vineyard for a day, where I'd recommend renting a jeep and touring the island.
Northwest - Spend a few days in Seattle visiting it's various sites and museums. Take either a drive around the Olympic Mountains, visiting Ocean Shores, the Hoh Rain Forest, and Hurricane Ridge...or drive the "Cascade Loop", visiting Leavenworth, Winthrop and much beautiful scenery. If you've brought your passport, I'd recommend a day in Canada, either in Victoria or Vancouver.
Arizona - Spend a day in each of these locations: Tombstone/Bisbee, Tucson, Saguaro National Park, Phoenix, and Sedona
These are by far my favorite trips that I've taken within the continental US. If you really just want to relax, I'd recommend Hawaii. If you love cruises, I'd recommend an Alaskan cruise.
Whatever you choose, have a great trip!

Take a drive on the Skyline Drive through the mountains of Virginia especially in October when the leaves are changing color. Then, go to Washington DC and see the White House, Lincoln Memorial, and Washington Monument within blocks of each other.
The beaches of L.A. are nice - DisneyLand (D'World?) and Hollywood is also there. Go to Las Vegas. Northern California has redwoods and sequoias.

Vegas: a waste, you can do it in a day and be bored
LA: a waste, you have to drive too far to get to the next interesting thing
NYC: great because there's an endless list of things to do and if you want to drive out of town, you've got Connecticut, Massachusettes and New Hampshire just to the north within driving distance.
San Francisco: gorgeous, easy to get around, lots to do and natural beauty just north of the city in Muir Woods.

In a week - you should see New York for two days, LA for two days, San Francisco for two days, and use the last to head home.
Or you can skip all that stuff and go straight to Hawaii for the whole week. Guarantee you won't be bored.

Philadelphia (old Capital) Chicago ('North' North America) and San Diego ('South' North America).
As grand as New York, Frisco and Los Angeles are, they do not signify the vast differences of North America...and if you visit the said three cities, chances are you'll meet people from the same part of the world you live in (I'm presuming you are British)...and who on earth wants that?!

its impossible to say unless you specify what you want out of a holiday. One person might want to visit The Grand Canyon while another might prefer the bright lights of New York.
give us more information!
