You want to be selling a product or service which is less vulnerable to spending patterns.

For example, selling luxury items or services in a down economy is challenging. Think of your own finances - what would you try to do without if you were needing to cut back?

Other things, such as food, gasoline, clothing (functional and practical over designer) will continue to sell.
