That would be the middle-eastern sand squirrel. He lives in a sandy hole 9 months out of the year and comes up every so often to eat. He has adapted to a way of filtering the sand through his teeth to get the vitamins and minerals out, then spits the rest back out. They are rather large, about the size of a beaver. Very rare.

LOL... I just made that up.

I live in Palm Springs, CA, which despite what the name might imply, is most definitely the desert. I see black squirrels running around in town all the time, though they aren't nearly as numerous or healthy-looking as the one's that live in Michigan (where I came from a year ago)... when you leave the city and go into the more natural desert-habitat, there are kangaroo-rats (kinda a hopping chipmunk), rock squirrels (light grayish-brown, look like a regular squirrel with a less-bushy tail), and what we called "ground squirrels" (or something very similar) in Michigan.

We have chipmunks (ground squirrels) in Southern Cali deserts.
