As for how widely known Avon is, the next question is: Are you referring to Avon the cosmetic company, Avon the river and county in England, or Avon the town in Connecticut.
I'm sure if you go to Avon.com you could find some press release about the company. As for the river, I think most people who have read Shakespeare or heard of him have heard of it. And as for the town in Connecticut it has a population of 11,201 so you have to know they've heard of it.
Seriously, though, Avon is well known, however the term notorious means widely and unfavorably known, so, No, none of the aforementioned "Avons" are notorious, whether you spell it correctly or not.
