The EXECUTIVE PRODUCER is the one who makes the most money. Even when they pay the stars cash upfront instead of a piece of the gross.
The Executive Producer does put up the monies are the credits for the film. The producer actually does the grunt work of putting everything together.

Usually the richest people in Hollywood are the Agents who represent the actors - they can make income from dozens of actors at the same time, while an individual actor is only making money from his-or-herself. A producer usually doesn't have more than three or four projects going at the same time, and they don't make money until they're released and paid for themselves - however, an agent might have 7 clients cast in the same summer blockbuster, and 5 clients cast in the next-biggest grossing film that season, and another 3 clients in a critically-aclaimed art film, and represent the entire cast of a low-budget indie film, and help broker the deal for a slasher film . . .
