i had surgery about a month and a half ago. i had a constant IV on for about 3 days, in my left hand. the pain that i had from the time they took the IV out the last time, til now, has lessened but not gone away. there isn't really a noticible color difference in my skin from my other hand, but it is a little swollen. more than anything, when i touch it, it feels like there is a small (about 2.5 cm) rod in there. i know it couldnt possibly be something foreign, so i'm assuming it's just a small section of the vein that's swollen, but it just feels strange because the ends of the "rod" are so defined to the touch. i've been meaning to go to the doctor and ask, but i honestly just don't have the time. anyone have any ideas?

You should go to your doctor and ask. I have 4 surgeries in 2 months because of a horrible car accident I was in. Believe it or not, I still have about 6 small scars from where the I V's were.
One of my veins has partially collasped due to the severe use of it. And I had swelling for a long time. Also, the veins that were used for the I V's were hard and it did feel like something was left in them, but there wasn't.
Your veins are probably fine, but mention it to the doctor anyways for peace of mind.

although IV's aren't my area of expertise.. i will say it's probably just irritation, scarring, healing of a blown vein, or a combination of the 3... someone blew a vein in the top of my hand once... it's been about 2 years now and i can still feel it sometimes. you could have some scar tissue or mild nerve damage that can make it hurt.. and it can still be irritated from the tons of medication/fluids that were dumped into your body threw it. if you are worried about it go see a doc, but as long as it's healing it's probably not a big deal.

Your vein is endurated. In other words, it had pressure on it for so long, that it hardened and formed a valve so that the blood wouldn't flow backwards. Your only solution is to wait (up to a year) and see if it goes away. There's pretty much nothing that you can do about it, and it's not a health issue.

it's not probable, but it is possible that part of the catheter from the IV snapped off and is still in your wrist. i would suggest that you go and see the doctor as this could result in a severe infection, and you should never have to tolerate pain for this long. if it is something else, the doctor will help treat it.

That is normal. I had the same thing, but mine lasted for about 4 months. Eventually it will just go away. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.
