Barak Obama in 08, Harvard Law Review, respects the law and the constitution. Mother from Kansas, father from Africa. Good credentials to help the US regain international respect. Good speaker, too!

We could. But there are very few QUALIFIED black candidates and fewer who seem to even WANT to run.

If you assume that the candidates who have a chance at winning a major party nomination come from Governers, Congress or other Government positions, there are only a few that I can think of:

Republican:
Colin Powell - has repeatedly expressed no desire and his recent opposition to the Bush Administration's interrogation tactics, kind of makes him less popular now.

Condi Rice - has repeated expressed no desire to run, she is single and I think that will hurt her too.

Democrats:
Former Gov. Doug Wilder of VA - ran unsuccessfully
Former Sen. Carolyn Braun of IL - ran unsuccessfully
Sen Barack Obama - is new to the Senate, I think he has a really good shot at becoming our first black prez, but not in 2008.

Maybe, if someone shows up who is qualified for the job. Barak Obama of Illinois would like it but he's not ready, and is too leftist anyway. Colin Powell is a moderate, but doesn't the job.

Maybe Powell isn't right for it either, although his autobiography sounds like the words of a pretty knowledgeable and reasonable leader. The highly decorated military author David Hackworth didn't think so, according to his book "Hazardous Duty". Powell's own autobigraphy

Race, sadly, is a really big issue for some people. It won't happen in the next election or even in the near future. It would be awesome if it did, but imagine all the crap that that guy (or lady) would have to go through to make it into the Oval Office. You'd probably have racist jerks protesting at every single campaign rally the candidate would try to have. Again, I'd love it if it didn't have to be that way, but unfortunately, that's the world we live in.

If a candidate comes forward that can have the whole population as a priority VS just race, then this person will be taken seriously. That is why it is difficult to get minorities elected, because they have a tendency to push their special interest group above all other Americans. Even Condi Rice believes we need to keep Affirmative Action. For that reason alone, she would not get my vote.

Nah. Who would it be?

I honestly believe the first black president will be shot (maybe not killed, but shot).

Colin Powell said no, Condi's a woman so NO!!! What other black politicos out there who seem ready for the WH?

Maybe in 2028, but not 2008.

The Dems don't even know who to run for president. In a perfect world, it'd be Hillary, but I'm seeing someone run again from 2004.

Firstly, the term "black" is passe. Even if you want to describe a person's skin color (which the simple minded and superficial often incline to), if you look you'll see that the skin of people thus designated is generally various shades of brown.
Secondly, the United States can easily have an African-American president. He or she merely has to be very conservative and duplicitious (the job seems to require it).
