Perhaps you never can. But it might not make a difference, in terms of how you live your daily practical life.
There are several angles you could take on this. For example, it might be said that if it's "something" than it must be "real", even if only as a figment of your (or somebody elses) imagination.
Regarding whether a particular thing is a hallucination or "illusion", perhaps verification by other "outside observers" in this world will satisfy you as to which is which.
Regarding whether all of experience is somehow a dream or existent only as your imagination, that's something you may never know for certain. Yet it's hard to see how it would actually change the way you choose to respond. You'll go on living and acting as though it's "real", either way.
Personally, I think it's good that you acknowledge this question and puzzle over it. This shows a healthy sense of skepticism and humility. By admitting that you are uncertain of what is real, you can become a more open-minded and tolerant person, in my opinion.
Good luck in your search!

Sounds like you've never been SAVED by LOGIC - try it, you might like it! ... However, if you are still troubled by your "reality" dilemma, then remember this: Real is like Normal, they are primarily observer defined. ... So, if you are psychologically comfortable with what you perceive to be real vs. not real (e.g. some people believe in angels) then that's normal to you, and as long as it does not interfere or clash with the generally-accepted social patterns of behavior (specially of your immediate community) then you should have no problem. Philosophically speaking, however, both "real" and "not real" are a part of "Being" - so drink deep and often from the fountain of existence while YOU still have Time. ... Are you in love with the moon, or the majestically indescribable "image" of the August moon rising from the sea and what it invokes in your spirit? Or does it make any difference? ... I say, that's purely up to you!
P.S. LOL - look who the Mexican cat just dragged in! ... Mission accomplished, g3n1ouz; nice job! ... Now, if only you learned to put an "O" after your "OUZ" we'll all have something nice to celebrate with in that garden of yours. ...~~~ Grumpy Mr. L :-) :-) :-)

If it's something tangible, touch it. If you think you're dreaming, try to wake up. If you're still not sure, act as if that thing is not real and see where it gets you (though it's important to know when to stop if you take this approach). I always look at this problem in a pragmatic way. If it seems real, you can't prove it isn't real, and assuming it isn't real won't help you get through life, might as well assume it is real.

One may consider something to be real ,as it may be so apparently .When we see the sun moving across the sky ,it is an unreal/ apparant truth as the real truth is otherwise,ie, earth is rotating and not the sun.
One's mental faculty can be trained to such a level , that the mind can be applied to find the real truth and to accept 'something', even though it hurts.

Stop watching MATRIX movies.
If you can touch it w/ your hand, it's definately real. However that said, even abstract ideas can be just as real even though you can't literally touch them. Take the idea of fascism, for example. Even though you can't physically touch it, it is indeed alive & well right here in America.
Reality is not as undefineable as you think.

When the drugs wear off and it's still there, then it's real.
As long as you think it's real that should be enough, just follow the instructions from the voices in your head.

If you mean in the physical sense, then something must register with any of our five senses.
If you mean in a conceptual sense, then your "idea" must be proven by a series of arguments that is acceptable as "true" by existing knowledge.
In an emotional sense, if it feels like it, then it is.

you have to go with your first instinct. Some people are born with a gift to differentiate between what is real and what is not.
