Like CarGuy says, but for small engines like 4 cycle lawnmowers they are not in the head but in the block. They have a snug fit for the valves and provide both a smooth bearing surface to control wear and also provide a seal so the engine's lubricating oil stays on it's side and the fuel mixture/exhaust gases on their side.

Valve guides are the sleeves in a Cylinder Head that the VALVES moves up and down in . These allow the valves to move smoothly up and down motion as the cam shaft opnes and closes the valves.

Hope that Helps.

valve guides are holes in the head that have seals for the push rods to go up and down in without letting the oil go back down into the head causing the engine to smoke when you first start it up.
