There are two different cities.The greek one is still around. City of Boeotia, in central Greece, north-west of Athens.The name "Thebes" is Greek while the Egyptian name for the city was "Apet" or "Apit".

There was a city named "Thebes" in ancient Greece. It is named in Sophocles' play, "Oedipus Rex" and is the kingdom of Oedipus. It's no longer around since the Byzantine Empire the the Crusades.
