the alpha-glycosidic linkage is below the plane of the rings and the beta glycosidic linkages (the bonds joining the simple sugar together) are above the plane of the rings

Depends on whether the glycosidic bond lies above (alpha) or below (beta) the plane of the cyclic sugar molecule.

The alpha dog I would say primarily looks out for number 1 w/o so much of a care for others...there is supreme selfishness and greediness involved here...while the mother hen being the queen bee still has that nurturing side...always looking out for her pack...the latter sounds like Roscoe to me...
