Two things...muscular or respiratory.
Have you been doing something strenuous that involved your upper chest muscles? Like push ups or lifting weights or painting a ceiling etc.?
If so, you might have overused some muscles. It feels like a heart attack...beleive me...it happened to me and I thought I was dying. Try a hot shower and massaging some hot rub (or even Vicks) on your chest and then do this. Wet a small towel, wring it out and heat it for 2 minutes in the microwave. Put it in a plastic bag and lie down and put it on your chest. Take some Tylenol or Ibuprofen which is probably better as it relaxes the muscles and is also an anti-inflammatory.
If you think it's respiratory...you might actually be having an asthma attack. That is what it sounds like. Are you wheezing at all? Is it getting tighter? Do you have allergies because severe allergies can trigger an asthma attack. So eg. if you were outside and the air was bad and the pollen high, maybe it triggered an asthma attack. Perhaps you should go to a walk in clinic or the ER where they can assess you and see. You will need to get Ventolin and some sort of steroid puffer like Flovent as well and keep those with you in future.
A quick way to know if you have problems with asthma is to buy a peak flow meter and check yourself when you are "well" and when you are not, your "peak" will be down. Take your puffer and remeasure yourself and see if it's helped after about an hour or so.
Just some tips I learned from experience with my own life and my own kids.
I'd go to the doc's right away and if it's muscular try what I said....get him to give you a good muscle relaxant if so. Good luck.

I have had the chest tightening and that has been diagnosed as acid reflux after having several tests. My difficulty breathing is due to asthma from allergies. The doctor told me that if your chest is tightening, your brain can send nerve impulses to your lungs telling them to work harder because of the tightening in your chest. In any case, see the doctor and let him run some tests. Better to be safe than sorry, eh?
