You do realize that Mermaids aren't real, right?
That means that if you are writing about them -- you can make mermaids from different parts of the ocean the same or different. You are the god of your fictional universe. You don't have to rely on The Little Mermaid -- you can just make it up. There is no requirement for you to match Mermaid Facts from other people's books.
