Can men and women not be platonic friends rather than eventual sexual partners if they are around each other. Why is it always perceived that they are in a sexual relationship?

There are similar-age male-female friendships all over the place. Sometimes the issue of attraction comes up and makes the friendship a little more complicated.

Because sex and the desire for it by the human race has been around a lot longer then being a responsible adult in the modern world. Going back in time, sexual contact was about all early man and women had in common. The urge to reproduce via sex was it. In today's world, even though we are civilized now, the instinct is still there. If I met you, even before I knew your name, I have no choice but to size you up sexually. Whether you know it or not, you would do the same. Just because you don't realize it, does not me you are not doing it.

So as it goes, sex is still a big part of all relationships between men and women.

I think it is because of lack of family life.By family i mean father, mother, brothers, sisters, true friends etc and all other members of ones family and family friends.Sexuality if looked into very seriously and deeply is a sort of escape from immediate reality.Just like grabbing something to eat and gulp it fast or taking out a cigarette and smoking when one is faced with an insecure feeling within due to one or other reason.Off course men and women can be platonic friends if sex does not matter in a relationship. Its other way round when one thinks we are only body and not the spirit and energy within, the intelligence within.

As much as anything else, it's because of advertising.

Nothing is sold in the US without a veneer or heavy coating of "sex".

Countless studies have shown that BOTH men and women pay more attention to advertising when it's "dressed up" with lots of "undress" or suggestiveness in either copy or picture or sound effect on television. Pay particular attention to the TAG deodorant commercials for a fine example of all three.

Lack of Boomer parent supervision also plays a role in lack of standards.
