without too deep of a review I found a post on dell's website:

OptiPlex vs. DimensionTM
Dell offers desktop systems that meet a wide range of needs. Dell Dimension desktops are ideal for small work groups or individuals who demand fast performance and the latest technology at an aggressive price, without the need for long product lifecycles and managed transitions

the optiplex was designed for a networking environment so I'd say go for the Dimension.

In addition my search for the optiplex pulled up a great many sites about memory upgrades... not about the computer.

The standard dell dimension 4100 will be a decent start for you at home. (it prolly has some upgrades from your work - and for free who can beat that?)

hope this helps... If you really need to know more about what's in the computer you can email me and I'll answer your questions
